So you want to get married in Church?

Congratulations!  It's wonderful that you want to make your marriage vows before God, in the time honoured way.

A church wedding won't just give you some lovely photographs to remember it by.  As Christians, we believe that God is Love... so it is only right that you should want Him to be at the very heart of your special day!

Where can I get married if I live in Whinmoor?

Understandably, not many couples want to have their wedding in a Primary School - though it has been done at St Paul's, by special licence!

As long as either you or your partner lives in the parish of Seacroft, you may be legally married in any one of the five churches in the team.  In practice, most choose to be married at St James' Church, on Seacroft Green.

Is it a problem if one of us is divorced?

It needn't be a problem that one or both of you have been married before if you can honestly answer "yes" to the following three questions:

  1. Are you sure that this relationship wasn't the cause of the breakdown of your previous marriage?

  2. Have you learnt from, and moved on from, whatever caused the breakdown of your previous marriage?

  3. If you have children from that relationship, are you continuing to care for them, emotionally, financially and in practical ways?

The Christian faith is all about forgiveness and new beginnings - but it is also very important that the marriage vows are honoured and not taken lightly.

When you come to book your wedding, the vicar will want to ask you these questions to satisfy him or herself that you are entering into this new relationship thoughtfully and responsibly.  If you can comfortable answer "yes" then there shouldn't be a problem.  If you're not sure, why not contact the vicar at St Paul's for a confidential chat?

What about if we don't live in Seacroft Parish?

if neither of you lives in the parish, then it may not be possible for you to be married here, but don't despair... there are three ways around this problem:

  1. If you want to be married here for family reasons, and you have parents or another close relative who lives in Seacroft Parish in a house where you have lived, or often stay, then it may be possible to put that address down for the purposes of the wedding.

  2. If you have no connection in the parish but are willing to come and worship regularly (at least twice a month) at one of the churches in the parish for a period of 6 months bfore the date of the wedding, then you qualify to go on the membership list for the parish - the "electoral roll" - which also means that you may marry in any of our churches.

  3. If neither of these is possible, you may wish to obtain a "special licence" to permit your wedding in Seacroft Parish.  This is a bit of a hassle, and involves a fee, but is a possibility in the last resort!

How much does a church wedding cost?

The answer to this question depends on where you want to marry, and how "fancy" you want the service to be!

In 2007, it cost a minimum of £340 to get married in Seacroft Parish (That's for the use of the church, all the legal stuff and a simple service without the organist, choir or bell-ringers)

If you want "all the trimmings" that fee will rise to about £510.  The fees for a wedding go up slightly each year at the beginning of January, but this gives you a "ball-park figure".

How do we go about booking a wedding?

Easy!  Come along to the Parish Office next to St. James' Church any Thursday evening between 8 and 8.30pm.  One of the clergy will be there to take your booking, give you more information and answer any questions you might have.

The Parish Office can be found by walking down the road, past St James' Church, and beyond the driveway to the vicarage.  Just before the bus-stop, there is a ginnel to the right, and you will find the door of the Office just up there.  The door will be open.  Just let yourself in, and wait in the waiting room if someone is already being seen to.
