A Baptism at St Paul's Church

What is a Baptism?

A Baptism, or "Christening" happens when parents want to make a public commitment to bringing their child up as a Christian - or when an older child or adult wishes to make this commitment for him or herself.

Everyone who is baptised becomes a member of the Christian Church world-wide.  It is as if they are "born again" into the family of God - and into the family of the Church.

Any person who lives in Whinmoor may be baptised at St. Paul's.

What happens in a Baptism?

When babies are baptised, we celebrate the fact that God blesses them, Jesus becomes their friend, and sends his Holy Spirit to guide them through life.

Babies and young children are not old enough to make promises to follow the Christian way for themselves, so their parents bring them to church.  The parents may ask godparents to join them in making the baptism promises - usually 2 adults of the same sex as the child, and one adult of the opposite sex.  Parents and godparents should themselves have been baptised.

The minister asks them

the following questions:

Will you pray for this child,

Draw him by your example

into the community of faith,

And walk with him

in the way of Christ?

With the help of God, we will.

Will you care for this child

And help her to take her place

within the life and worship of Christ’s Church?

With the help of God, we will.

Do you turn to Christ?

I turn to Christ.

Do you repent of your sins?

I repent of my sins.

Do you renounce evil?

I renounce evil.

      Here, you are promising:

  1. to pray for the child,

  2. to show by the way you live what it means to live as a Christian

  3. to help him or her to grow in the Christian faith.

  4. to care for the child

  5. to encourage him or her to attend church or Sunday School (and will mean coming along yourself!)

      This means:

  1. Do you choose to follow Jesus Christ?

  2. Are you sorry for the wrong things you have done in the past?

  3. Do you turn away from wrong actions and attitudes in the future?

How do I arrange a Baptism?

If, as an adult or older child, you wanted to be baptised, we would expect that you would be coming regularly to church, and would invite you to take part in a short course of instruction to help you to understand the implications of the promises you would be making.

Baptisms of babies usually take place on the fourth Sunday of each month in our main 10.30am Sunday service.

bullet

You need to book a Baptism at least a month in advance - remembering that the summer period, and Bank Holiday weekends tend to be very popular.

bullet

Occasionally, another child will be baptised at the same service as yours - but because we want the service to be special for you, we will not accept bookings for more than two families on the same day.

You may enquire about availability of dates, and make a booking by contacting the vicar.
